Richard E Grant dropped the F-bomb. Air kisses were executed with a level of skill normally reserved for Olympic sports. And I finally got to meet Bois De Jasmin‘s charming Victoria Frolova, whose iris scent enveloped her petite frame with the same elegance she displays in her writing. In other words, this morning’s Jasmine Awards ceremony was an event to remember… not least because I was fortunate enough to win, much to my amazement.
Even though I’m thrilled to have picked up another trophy, I do genuinely believe – and I hope Victoria and my other fellow nominee, Nick Gilbert, don’t think it presumptuous of me to say this – that no matter which one of us had been selected, the real achievement had already been reached at the shortlisting stage. No so-called ‘mainstream’, establishment authors had been shortlisted in the Best Digital Feature category, and if that doesn’t send a message about who’s doing the best online perfume writing, I don’t know what does. Thank goodness for the blogosphere!

Ann, thank you. And yes, totally humbling. When I look at the names of the people who were shortlisted, I can't quite believe I was in their company.
As for my perfume… well, it's a terrible cliche, but I thought I'd have to wear a jasmine scent to the Jasmine Awards, so I went for one of my favourites: Serge Lutens' Sarrasins.

As a side note, and as a non-anglophone reader, I find the expression "humbling", uttered or proclaimed by award winners, quite strange: one supposes that to win an award, especially a prestigious one that puts one self au pair with great achievers should be anything but a humbling experience. Pride and self satisfaction would me my non-american/non-british feelings!! 😉
