I’ve already mentioned this on Twitter and Basenotes, but just in case some of you aren’t yet aware: episode 1 of Ian Denyer’s perfume documentary will be broadcast on BBC Four at 9 pm on Tuesday 28th June.

According to BBC Four’s website, the first instalment will focus on Guerlain and Estee Lauder (in the guise of the Tommy Hilfiger brand) and will contrast the creation of Shalimar Parfum Initial with Loud. It looks as though the incident of Jean-Paul Guerlain’s racist remark has also made it to the final cut. The Observer has included episode 1 as one of its TV picks of the week.

Friday’s edition of Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour featured a brief snippet of the programme and also included an interview with Roja Dove; UK-based readers can listen to it by clicking here (it starts at around the 30-minute mark).

If you live outside the UK, you may like to consult Google about ways of viewing BBC programmes on the internet. I believe there was recently a move to allow non-UK, EU residents access to the BBC iPlayer for a fee, but I’m not sure anything came of it.

On an unrelated note, please come back here on Tuesday to find out who’s had to cope with twenty questions from my stash of blotters. And finally, those of you who read my blog on a mobile phone may have noticed that the format and layout have changed slightly. If the new look doesn’t quite work for you – or if you detect any glitches – please do let me know.

Have a great Sunday,

Persolaise.

  1. I own a tv, I don't watch it much but when I do it is often bbc4.

What did you think of the programme? I loved it, it was flawed but frankly any hour long programme about perfume was always going to win with me. I think the unfortunate issues with JP Guerlain aside it showed that perfume houses that are in it for the real reasons and who start with the scent not the marketing are the ones that last.

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
