My love of list-making isn’t often reflected on my blog – mainly because I rarely seem to have the time to indulge in this most boyish of activities – but Advent is a time of year when everyone gives in to geekery and publishes endless charts of favourites. Fingers crossed, I should be able to post my personal rundown of the best fragrances of 2011 before the year is out, but today, I’d like to direct my thoughts to the empty space beneath the Christmas tree and provide you with a few ideas for last-minute yuletide gifts. So without further ado…

For ‘the males’: Opus IV from Amouage – It may not contain as much testosterone as some other Amouage masculines, but this woody, clove-y, ‘Omar Sharif dressed as Santa’ take on spices is perfect for the yuletide season.

For ‘the females’: Esprit d’Oscar from Oscar De La Renta – A not-so-distant cousin of L’Heure Bleue, it blends florals, vanilla and a compelling savoury note with grace and elegance.

For those who don’t care about the whole business of ‘the males’ and ‘the females’: Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille from Annick Goutal – Patchouli is the star player in this modern chypre. Deep, dusky and much more dangerous than you’d expect.

For those who want to pretend it’s still summer: Stecca from Hilde Soliani – An unusual cologne-like twist on the green aspects of tomato. Just ignore the overly synthetic top notes.

For those who quite like the fact that it’s winter: Musc Ravageur from Frederic Malle – Like the best hefty orientals, it knows when to envelop you in its animalic warmth and when to give you room to breathe.

For those who aren’t afraid of nuclear sillage: Rien from Etat Libre d’Orange – The clue is in the name: the only thing this stuff doesn’t contain is the kitchen sink! A mind-bending cocktail of woody, leathery notes. Spray it, and watch as people turn to find the source of the smell.

For those who aren’t afraid of an overload of sugar: Candy from Prada – Silliness with brains. Daniela Andrier’s irresistible take on burnt sugar and benzoin.

For a bling babe: limited edition, Swarovski-encrusted Fracas from Robert Piguet – The fragrance itself is genius – quite simply, one of the best tuberoses of all time – so if you know someone who’s partial to glitter and you have £700 to spare, this could well be the perfect gift.

For ‘modern vintage’: Miriam from Tableau De Parfums – Roses love Andy Tauer as much as he loves them, which helps explain why this aldehydic floral is so effortlessly endearing.

For the ladies’ good old daysShalimar from Guerlain – Jacques Guerlain’s quintessential oriental seems to be going through a high-quality phase at the moment, so grab yourself a bottle of the current batch and feast upon the unparalleled blend of bergamot, civet and amber.

For the gents’ good old days: Knize Ten from Knize – Another early 20th century masterpiece, this perfect leather is just about as sophisticated as masculine scents get.

For a very special gesture to a very special someone, spend some time on the net and try to hunt down a bottle of vintage Diorissimo from Dior. The current version is probably the best that François Demachy can be achieve under IFRA’s unforgiving recommendations on hydroxycitronellal and lyral, but it’s nowhere near the heart-stopping beauty of the older incarnations. A lily of the valley par excellence, and one of very few perfumes that might actually cause you to shed a tear.

For those who are feeling lucky: keep reading…

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Linda Pilkington, founder of and perfumer at Ormonde Jayne, one of the world’s most highly-respected niche brands. I’d love to be able to write more about our encounter in the new year, but for now I’ll just say that if you ever have the opportunity to hear her tell the story of how her company was formed, be sure to take it. It’s quite an extraordinary tale, full of twists and coincidences that would have made Victorian novelists raise their eyebrows with incredulity. Fortunately for perfume-lovers, it culminated in the creation of several interesting fragrances, some of which I’d like to share with one lucky Persolaise reader. Thanks to Ms Pilkington’s generosity, I’m able to give away a gorgeously presented Ormonde Jayne Discovery Set, which features sample vials of some of the firm’s key scents, including Ormonde Woman, Ormonde Man, Tolu, Orris Noir and Zizane. To enter the draw, please read the terms and conditions below and leave a comment on this post on the subject of which perfume you’d most like to receive as a gift. And be quick: the give-away closed on Monday night.

Finally, please don’t forget that I’m being interviewed by Talk Radio Europe tomorrow morning at around 10:30 (UK time).

Have a wonderful weekend,

Persolaise.

  1. Many thanks for this inspiring and (as ever) entertaining read.

I would be very, very grateful to Santa if he could bring me a bottle of L'Heure Defendue or L'Heure Fougeuse by Mathilde Laurent for Cartier.
But most likely, I will be treating myself to a fragrant vial, albeit one in a lower price range…

  2. Right now I think it would be a bottle of Norma Kamali Incense. I pulled out my decant yesterday and got very, very sad at the idea f it being empty, and I can't seem to find anyplace that sells it. ::sigh::

  3. I have many perfumes on my wish list!
Jicky extrait or the "regressive" Cuir Beluga by Guerlain,
By Kilian's Sweet redemption and Ormone Jayne's own Frangipani…these are the tip of the iceberg!

BTW, I would love to try both her Ormonde woman and man, as well as Tolu.
Thank you for the draw: I love lists too!

  4. Thank you for the inspiring shopping list!
I'm going through a phase where I have too many fragrances I'm lusting after and I can't just choose one…
…but Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise, L'Artisan Bois Farine would be the 2 that I'm most interested in.

  5. Your giveaways are killer!!! If I hadn't already bought it, I would like to receive Prada Candy as a gift. Silliness with brains is a great description, and one that I hope applies to me as well.

  6. I think the one I would most like to receive as a gift (for myself) would be Jubilation XXV. But what would make me happiest would be a little bottle of Amouage Homage that I could give my wife!

  7. How exciting!
Ormonde Jayne is my favorite brand.
Last year I bought Tolu as my New Year Gift. I was more than impressed with fast (and free) shipping and elegant packaging. I already knew I would be impressed with the scent.

I would love to try the rest of the samples in the set — I know that Ormonde Woman and Man are very famous, but I still haven't laid my hands on them.

As a gift for Christmas this year I would like to receive a bottle of 1740.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. The two cravings which spring immediately to mind are Ormonde Jayne Woman (love my decant to pieces!) and Gobin Daude Seve Exquise. Neither of these are happening of course. OOOhhh and Dior Bois D'Argent original formula. Soooo not happening either…sigh….

I would love more Ormonde Jayne! Am very interested in trying the masculines as well.

  9. This list is eternally good!!! 🙂 Any of Andy T`s rose-happy scents, Caron`s sweet pea scent to remind me of Spring!, and Goutal`s 30th anniversary Baccarat masterpiece. I HAVE savings for the later, but can`t get to it…YT does not kid around!! 🙂 🙂

  10. Great post!

I would really love to receive a bottle of Amouage Gold as a gift, it has been at the top of my wish list for a good few months now and I'm starting to feel that I NEED it.

  11. EchoCharlie, a perfume lover after my own heart.

    You're in the draw too.

And Laurinha, I forgot to mention above that you're in the draw as well.

  12. Fernando, the next time I buy an Amouage (or ask someone to buy one for me) it'll almost certainly be Jubilation XXV.

I hope you manage to give your wife some Homage.

    You're in the draw.

  13. This list in fabulous, Persolaise! The gift I would love to see under the tree, based on your lovely description, is vintage Diorissimo. Andy T.'s Miriam would be wonderful too!

Thank you for the generous draw. Love Ormonde Jayne.

  14. The perfume I'd most like to receive as a gift? It varies from day to day honestly? I think my top 3 right now would be:

    1. Tauer Une Rose Vermeille – I keep fantasizing about this one, it took a while, but it's dug in its claws.
    2. Esprit d'Oscar
    3. Love, Chloe

  15. From your great list of gift ideas I'd most like to receive Miriam — "effortlessly endearing" is the perfect description. I'd be willing to take an unsniffed risk (since Santa's buying) on the deep, dark and dangerous Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille.
Most of all I'd love vintage Diorella, as mine from the late 80s is all gone, though I still have some early 90s Diorissimo.
Thanks for the generous draw opportunity.

    — Lindaloo

  16. In my dreams, I find a bottle of vintage Ubar under the tree. In reality, I'd happily accept a bottle of Orris Noir.

  17. This is a wonderful draw. The OJ discovery set is beautiful.
I think if I had to choose one fragrance right now it would be Krigler's Lovely Patchouli #55 Night. I love #55 Day too, but Night is sultry.

  18. great list-many of them on my wish list for a long time now
If I could ask for a Christmas present, it would be "l'Heure Bleue" in extract
thanks for the draw and happy holidays to all

  19. I enjoy reading lists. Thank you.

It's funny: I spent probably 10-15 minutes thinking what to wish for – as if there was really a chance of the wish to come true and it was really important to choose wisely.

I think I'd love to receive Ormonde Jayne's Ta'if parfum. I didn't have a chance to try it but Ta'if EdP is one of my perfume loves so I think it's a nice thing to wish for.

No need entering me into the giveaway: I got a set a year ago and since then have added six of the perfumes to my collection. I hope somebody else will get a chance to try them and find favorites.

  20. Ormonde Jayne sounds awesome!

I'd most like to receive L'Heure Bleue as a gift, mostly because that would mean that the giving party understands my character well enough to match something that would suit me!

  21. I'd love it if Santa brought me a bottle of Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens or Geisha Noire by Aroma M.

  22. I'd like Santa or the Three Wise Men to give me By Kilian Back to Black. I'm in love with that perfume.

Thanks for the draw! I have always wanted to try Ormonde Jayne fragrances.

  23. Lindaloo, now that Diorling has been re-released, I can see lots of perfume fans typing the words 'vintage Dior' into eBay.

    You're in the draw too.

Oh dear, I forgot to say that Isayah and Tomatefarcie are in the draw as well.

  24. Joshuaang, your comment reminded me that it's so difficult buying perfume for other people. I hope you get your L'Heure Bleue though.

    You're in the draw.

  25. LOL, I'd like a bottle of Opus IV for christmas!!! But, I know for sure that I'm getting a bottle of Ormonde Jayne Orris Noir, and that's pretty awesome too.
    🙂

  26. It's amazing how difficult it is to answer this seemingly straightforward question. I love so many perfumes and still want to try so many others. I'm tempted to go for something that is no longer in production or hard to find. I wouldn't mind a bottle of Helmut Lang Man or even Cuiron.

  27. Thanks for your enjoyable christmas list. There is something there for everyone. My fantasy gift bottle would be Jicky in extrait or perhaps a vintage Arpege extrait. Failing those: any fragrant gift is lovely. Thanks to you and Linda for the generous draw.

  28. your list in wonderful 🙂 i have 3 wants in order of: impossible due to the difficulty of finding it/possible but too expensive/possible and findable, which are: kenzo "unidentified fragrance object" / bond no. 9 "madison square park" / lancome "o de l'orangerie" (this last one is most likely and great to get as a gift, because it's simple and lovely but not special enough to warrant buying it myself ;)). "ormond jayne woman" (as well as tiare and champaca) is one i've been dying to try for years! thank you for the opportunity. have a superb sunday 🙂

  29. I would love to find a bottle of Guerlain Iris Ganache but I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen. Thanks for holding the giveaway.

  30. Great list!

I have sweet redemption on my "want!" list.
I'm also curious about the new parfums d'empire!

I love hearing from my readers, so please feel free to write a comment or ask a question.
